Spring Crush in Paris

Junya Watanabe’s show on Saturday morning had the kick of an energy drink. Using sports fabrics like mesh and nylon, Mr. Watanabe created a collection as simple as it was innovative, with neon-bright mini dresses and jackets with an array of zipped vents, cool shifts made from interlocking pieces of mesh and jersey, and some lovely fluted dresses with slivered insets. About 25 percent of the fabrics came from Puma for a one-time collaboration with Mr. Watanabe. (It was unclear whether the Puma pieces would be produced, but I will find out more tomorrow in the Comme des Garçons showroom.)
Although the clothes were essentially sporty, Mr. Watanabe gave many pieces a couture feel, like a black hooded nylon jacket with a loose, billowy back. The sneakers — high-tops in silver, sleek numbers in white and black — were fantastic.

In the afternoon, Rei Kawakubo staged an engaging Comme des Garçons show whose operative word was “crush,” according to the designer. Crush could be taken in several ways: the pile up of garment patterns in a single outfit, creating an extreme type of sculpture, or a love crush.
I couldn’t say. There was a romantic quality to the silhouettes, which featured hats made from crushed cans and other materials. But there was the obvious analogy to the amount of waste in a consumer culture. The textures were very interesting, created from compressing natural cotton and gold or black fabrics, pushing them around on the body and stitching them down to form a new shape. As usual, Ms. Kawakubo gave a lot to contemplate and enjoy.

#3 FB: New York Street Style

Street style in NYC has such a broad spectrum.  However there are 3 key items I've seen multiple times styled in several different ways.

The first item is a denim button down. This is also one of my personal favorites. You can style it so many different ways!
The second is a slouchy sweater.  I saw this style a lot last fall and it has made a come back. It's especially big on the FIT campus.
The third is another one I've seen a lot on campus and also in soho, and the meat packing at night, it's the leather look leggings or pants.

#2 FB: 1 key item for Fall 2013

 Fall 2013
Lace Dress

This fall we are seeing a trend with baroque inspired styles.  I think ideas of taking something from a past period will continue into Fall 2013. I see more coming from the Victorian era and involving a fair amount of lace.  The key piece for Fall 2013 will be a short lace dress, nothing too over the top.  Leaving all the detail in the lace and not overworking the design.

#1 Fashion Blogs you like

I'm not one to really follow up on too many blogs, but I think this class will really get me more involved in the blogging world. My two favorite blogs are DonnaDaily.com by Donna Kim and BryanBoy by Bryan Yambao. DonnaDaily focuses more on feminine everyday pieces that can be found in popular stores, whereas BryanBoy is much more high fashion and edgy.
